Adjectives
There are 2 types of adjectives:
い adjectives and な adjectives.
い adjectives always end in い
な adjective generally don’t end with い apart from very few exceptions!
Modified nouns:
Expensive Pen -> 高いペン
Cute Dog -> かわいい犬
Just put the い adjective in front of the noun.
ふるい本を読みます。
I read an old book.
The sentence structure when including verbs stays the same, the adjective is just added onto the front.
That noun is adjective’:
あのじてんしゃは新しいです。
That bicycle is new.
X は y です.
Noun wa adjective desu.
It’s English equivalent would be ‘The cat is cute’. ‘The car is new’.
ねこはかわいいです。
The cat is cute.
と And/With
The と particle can also be used to say you are doing an activity with somebody.
と = And/With
ラメンととんかつおねがいします。
Please give me ramen and tonkatsu.
お母さんとかんこくの映画を見ます。
With my mum, I watch a Korean movie.
毎朝、かぞくと朝ごはんを食べます。
Every Morning, I eat breakfast with my family.
Notice how there is no subject, as its assumed that you are the subject in these sentences.
一人で/Alone:
一人で.. to do something alone.
Note that the で Particle is in use here!
一人 can also mean 1 person, rather than just the connotation of being ‘Alone’.
今日、一人で学校に行きます。友達がありません。
Today, I went to school alone. I don’t have friends.
Learning with music:
Key Words:
はちがつ = August
てがみ = Letter
おおきな = Large ( being used as a な adjective as it’s a special adjective that can be い or な).
ありがとう = Thank you
さよなら = Goodbye
Key phrases:
一緒かえろう = Together, let’s return (let’s go home together). 帰る (to return) is in a form we’ve not studied yet, thats similar to ‘ましょう’ (let’s) but casual.
とてもとてもうれしかったよ。A word from todays word list, and the reason we’re looking at this song today! Let’s break it down!
とてもとても = Very Very.
うれしい = Happy (here it’s in its short casual form, hence the かった).
よ = Telling you something you don’t already know.
All together: I’m telling you, I was really really happy.
Bonus: ほんとう is Really/Truthfully. You might hear a character saying 本当に? To say ‘really?’ or ‘is that true?’.
二人のひみつのきちのなか:
Let’s break this down as there’s a few words and grammar we’ve learnt!
二人 is the counter for 2 people.
の posession particle, whatever is coming next belongs to the couple, or ‘the two of us’.
ひみつのきち is secret base (ひみつ being secret, きち being base, and の being places between two nouns when the first noun describes the second.
のなか = Inside. We’ve seen this pattern when saying ‘かばんのなかに’ (inside the bag).
