どちら is often considered a more formal or polite version of どこ (“where”) or どれ ( “which one”).
• どれ is used when asking “which one” among three or more options.
• どちら is used when asking “which one” between two options. It can also mean “where” in a more polite way.
The reason dochira tends to focus on two options is linked to its origin in classical Japanese, where it was more focused on “directions” (left or right, for instance) and distinctions between two things. Dore, on the other hand, is broader and does not have this two-option limitation.
Formality-wise, you can use dochira in place of dore to sound polite, even if there are more than two options. In modern usage, dochira can sometimes be used for more than two in formal contexts, but traditionally it implies a choice between two.
