て form う verbs

く/ぐ

このクラスで, we will be looking at conjugating う verbs ending in く/ぐ.

く Endings:

  • Drop the く

  • Add いて

例えば:たとえば

書くかく/to write -> 書いてかいて

聞くきく/to ask/listen -> 聞いてきいて

ぐ Endings:

Similar to how ぐ is く + the 2 little lines, the て form of く and ぐ follows the same rule. Instead of いて, we drop the ぐ add いで.

例えば:たとえば

泳ぐおよぐ/to swim -> 泳いでおよいで

Side note:

いく (to go) is a て form irregular and conjugates to いって!

Connecting sentences

Using て form

We've already introduced using the と particle as 'and' when reffering to nouns.

例えば:

コーヒーと お茶おちゃ/tea おねがいしますplease。

Coffee and tea please.

However, と cannot be used to connect sentences. Instead, we use て form.

例えば:

私はコンビニに 行っていって/teaラーメンを 買いますかいます

I go to the convenience store and buy ramen.

It is a good time to remind you that て form does not translate to ‘and’. It’s a grammar point that has no English equivalent, and one way it can be used is to connect 2 sentences in a way very similar to using ‘and’. Unlike ‘and’ You cannot just add ‘て’ anywhere to connect 2 sentences.
