て form す/する verbs

このクラスで, we will be looking at conjugating う verbs ending in す/する

す Endings:

  • Drop the す

  • Add して

例えば:たとえば

話すはなす/to speak -> 話してはなして

溶かすとかす/to comb -> 溶かしてとかして

する Endings:

す and する endings conjugate similar in て form.

  • する -> して

例えば:たとえば

勉強するべんきょうする/to study -> 勉強してべんきょうして

Using て form

て form with る verbs:

Drop the る, add て

ラーメンを 食べてたべて お茶おちゃ/teaを 飲みますのみます。

I eat ramen and drink tea.

て form with う/つ/る(う) endings verbs:

Drop the う/つ/る, add って

スーパーでラーメンを 買ってかってうちに 帰ります帰ります。

I buy ramen at the supermarket and return home.

て form with う/つ/る(う) endings verbs:

Drop the う/つ/る, add って

ここに 待ってまってはいけません。

You cannot wait here.

て form with う/つ/る(う) endings verbs:

Drop the う/つ/る, add って

うちに 帰ってかえって 寝ますねます。

I return home and sleep.

て form with く/ぐ endings verbs:

Drop the く/ぐ, add いて/いで

ペンで 書いてかえってください。

Please write in pen.

川かわで 泳いでおよいではいけません。

You may not swim in the river.

メモ:

行くいく Is irregular when conjugated to て form and becomes 行っていって。

て form review

Using て form

If your wondering whether て form represents 'and' or 'and then', think of how ‘and’ is used to connect sentences in English.

I eat cake and drink coffee.

I go to the supermarket and buy fruit.

Both are perfectly fine uses of 'and', though the first one implies that you are drinking coffee and eating cake (toghether), whilst in the second sentence its assumed you go to the super market, and then buy fruit. It's the same in Japanese, it just depends on context.

例えば:

私は 店みせに 行っていって ぶどうgrapesを 買いますかいます。

I go to the store and buy grapes.

In English, we conjugate the entire sentence into past tense:

I ate breakfast then went to school.

However, when using て form, the tense of the final verb indicates the tense of the entire sentence. There is no past tense version of て form.

例えば:

私は 郵便局ゆうびんきょくに 行っていってふうとうを 買いましたかいました。

I went to the post office and bought an envelope.

お母さんおかあさんくは 友達ともだちと 図書館としょかんに 行っていって 本ほんを 読みましたよみました。

Mum went to the Library with friends and read books.
