Whenever you see a ‘little っ’…

…it means the first character of the next syllable is extended.
For example:

ざっし = Zasshi
(Magazine)
ざっし has a ‘little っ’ in the middle.

Therefore the S from the し/shi in the next syllable is extended.
And if your every stuck on which sound should be extended…

It’s always the constant after the っ! If it were the vowel before, we’d simply add another vowel!
More examples:

けっこん = kekkon (wedding)
がっこう = gakkou (school)
はっぴょう = happyou (presentation)
